FLYWAY DATA COLLECTION & MONITORING

Wetlands International and BirdLife International have developed extensive networks of (mostly voluntary) observers that willingly and skilfully perform data collection and monitoring tasks. However, in some parts of the AEWA region, for example Central Asia and the Middle East, the network of observers is relatively sparse. This causes gaps in survey data, creating blind spots in geographical coverage of available monitoring data and knowledge of certain migratory waterbird species. The flyway monitoring and data collection training component of the WOW project has aimed to improve monitoring capacity in these regions and has helped to fill some of the existing gaps.
