Nairobi, November 19, 2007 - A series of international workshops on enhancing the conservation of Waterbirds in Eastern and Southern Africa was launched in Nairobi Yesterday. 'The timing of these workshops is opportune as we currently face various conservation challenges that include environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity in all regions of the world,' said Erustus Kanga, the head of ecological monitoring and biodiversity evaluation at Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in a speech read on behalf of the KWS Director, Dr. Julius Kipng'etich.

A number of regional WOW Training Boards are currently being established in the 4 WOW Sub-regions. The first WOW Regional Training Board Meeting took place in Amman, Jordan for the Middle East region on 10-11 November and the WOW Training Board Meeting for Eastern and Southern Africa will be taking place in Entebbe, Uganda in December.

Bonn, 09 November 2007 - The 32nd Meeting of the CMS Standing Committee took place on 8-9 November at the UN Campus in Bonn. Next to the presentation of highlights of the CMS conservation programme during the last year – there was also a short presentation on the WOW Project. Bert Lenten, Executive Secretary of AEWA and Florian Keil, Communication Officer of the Wings over Wetlands Project (WOW) and AEWA's Information Officer attended the meeting and presented WOW to the inter-governmental body of CMS and appealed for urgently needed funds for the project.
