Almaty, 8-10 April 2008 - The first Regional Training Board Meeting for Central Asia, the Southern Caucasus and Russia was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan with the aim of establishing the 4th Sub-regional Training Board. The meeting was organized within the framework of the Wings Over Wetlands (WOW) Project and was hosted by ACBK (The Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan)
Members of the CASAR region were selected according to certain criteria, that answered set requirements. Among those represented were environmental Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources Protection, Ministry of Agriculture, Governmental Institutions (Institutes of Zoology, Laboratory of Ornithology), AEWA and Ramsar representatives.
The main goal of the meeting was to establish the Training Board as well as to develop TB roles and responsibilities, to review Training Kit and to define next steps to be taken. On the final day of the meeting a Chair was unanimously elected. There are a total of 12 TB members, leading by Rustamov Eldar (Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan), who was selected as a Chief of the Board, two Deputies – Alexander Solokha (Wetlands International, Russia) and Edith Meyer (Conservation Education Coordinator for CA).
The meeting was organized by the Association for the Conservation of the Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK), the WOW Sub-regional CDO for CASCR. Prior to the opening of the meeting on the 9th of April, a field trip to Bolshoye Almatinskoye Lake was taken to enjoy the picturesque landscapes of Kazakhstan.
With the help of ACBK, the WOW PCU and participants themselves the meeting was a resounding success promising long- term cooperation within the region.
