New flyway-based Training & Awareness Raising Framework under development

15-Oct-2007

A new draft Training & Awareness Raising Framework that integrates the flyways concept into wetland management planning has been elaborated by Wetlands International and other international project partners in the context of the Wings Over Wetlands (WOW) Project for stakeholders in the AEWA region.

Once finalized, the new Framework, will become a practical tool for streamlining and for building wetland and waterbird management and conservation capacity throughout the African-Eurasian region. The new capacity building tool has a unique focus on the flyway concept and tries to integrate and link the ideas of flyway conservation to existing wetland management planning and training practices and needs in the AEWA region.

WOW Training & Awareness Raising Meeting in Almen, the Netherlands

WOW Training & Awareness Raising Workshop Participants (Photo: Michael Brombacher, Central Asian IBA Coordinator)An international meeting with over 40 participants from the 4 main WOW Sub-Regions (Middle East, Central Asia & Caucasus, Western Africa, Eastern and Southern Africa) took place in Almen, the Netherlands in September to refine the draft WOW Training and Awareness Raising Framework prepared by Tunde Ojei (WOW Project Capacity Development Officer at Wetlands International). The workshop gave participants from throughout the African-Eurasian region the opportunity to share and incorporate regional perspectives and training needs into the draft Framework.

Participants at the workshop included members of the wider WOW Project team from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caucasus now actively working together to improve the conservation of waterbirds throughout the AEWA region.  The workshop was also attended by staff from the main WOW international partner organisations such as Wetlands International, BirdLife International, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and AEWA.

Following the meeting, a revised draft Framework, which now includes the outcomes of the workshop was circulated to the participants and is currently in the process of being reviewed by the participants and regional WOW teams. The latest draft is available for download here and a final Framework is under development. For questions regarding the Framework please contact Tunde Ojei at Wetlands International.
