WOW Flyway Training Kit now available from Regional Centres: Academic institutions take notice

Click to enlarge!Bonn, 26 October 2010 - The WOW Flyway Training Kit (FTK), a one-of-a-kind resource in flyway-scale conservation, is making quite an impact on some academic institutions in Africa and Eurasia.  Originally intended to build professional capacity to plan, implement, monitor and engage in effective flyway-scale conservation of migratory waterbirds and wetland habitats, the modules are being used by some academic institutions as part of their own training programmes.

This week the Garoua Wildlife School in Cameroon formally included the FTK within its curriculum for wildlife management training courses being offered by the institution. The good news comes on the heels of another significant endorsement from Jordan’s Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature which recently adopted the FTK’s methodologies, principles and teaching techniques within its ongoing training.

The WOW FTK is the result of a broad collaborative effort among many donors, partners and training institutes across the African-Eurasian region and is now available in English, French, Arabic and Russian.  The package includes three modules with example-rich text, case studies and exercises, presented in a flexible ring-bound format and supported by a comprehensive set of PowerPoint presentations, as well as accompanying CDs with a range of supporting material.   This important tool represents an important step towards meeting core strategic objectives of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and AEWA.

This endorsement of the WOW FTK among academic institutions speaks to the quality and comprehensiveness of this important resource.  Launched in May 2010 at a special side event during the fourteenth meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity's Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice in Nairobi, Kenya, it has now been distributed to each of the WOW Regional Centres located in Dakar, Nairobi, Jordan and Almaty.
