October 2008 was a busy month in the WOW Lithuanian demonstration site “Nemunas River delta”. Beside two large-scale public events (the “Euro-bird-watch Day-2008” and the “Bird Rally-2008” with over 1,200 people participating), a large international conference entitled: “The Nemunas River delta – internationally important bird area” was held in the Nemunas River Delta from 24-25 October 2008.
Over 40 participants from 8 countries and several international organizations (UNEP/GEF, Wetlands International, BirdLife International, Association “Migratory Birds of the Western Palaearctic”) came together and shared information about internationally important areas for nesting and migratory waterbirds in the cross-border Nemunas River delta (shared by Lithuania and Russia) and the conservation and management of the entire Nemunas River basin (shared by Lithuania, Russia and Belarus).
The conference program also included round-table discussions on conservation of the globally threatened Aquatic Warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola) and other vulnerable bird species in this transboundary wetlands complex.
